Decent Homes Standard

All property owned and managed by the council must meet the Decent Homes standard. To meet the standard, property must have reasonably modern facilities, be warm and weatherproof by 2010 (2015 in Scotland).

It has been estimated that £40 billion needs to be spent to upgrade homes to a 2 star standard and another £8 billion will be spent by the military over the next 10 years on their housing. In practice, this means new kitchens, bathrooms, electrics, lighting, roofing, boilers and other facilities, all meeting modern fire and safety standards.
