FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Legionella bacteria found at Police Stations, Hospitals, Councils and Leisure centres in last quarter.

19th November, 2008

A Poole police station, a hospital in Cheltenham, a Thurrock Council youth centre and Connexions office, a Liverpool Council building and a leisure centre in Belfast have all had the deadly bacteria, Legionella, found on at their premises in the last quarter.

The bacteria, which can kill people, infected a person at the Cheltenham General Hospital.  Tests identified the bacteria in the water supply for four wards at the hospital.  In 2007, 10 people in Gloucestershire contracted legionnaires disease and the outbreaks were reported to the Gloucestershire Health Protection Team.

During a recent HSE inspection in the Somerset an Inspector commented “On the issue of Legionella, many of the homes we visited lacked a specific risk assessment, management system or knowledge of the controls required, and it was this area which notched up the largest number of improvement notices."

Legionella bacteria control now has added importance as negligent management of this risk can end in personal prosecution of the manager, if injury or death occurs.

This is where the national legionella control specialists, Waterchem, can help.

Waterchem provides complete water hygiene management programmes to a wide range of organisations including councils, hospitals, food and beverage firms, heavy industry, pharmaceuticals, plastics and facilities management companies.

The firm operates an ISO 9001:2000 quality assured service and support system. All control programmes are designed to comply with the HSE ACoP L8 Legionnaires Disease: The Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems.

Waterchem are also accredited members of the Legionella Control Association.
