FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Better Knowledge of Medical Terminology Leads to Greater Efficiency and Effectiveness in Patient Care.
15th May 2008
Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK
Administrative staff, such as medical secretaries, are vital to the smooth running of practices and hospital departments. Support staff with a solid understanding of medical terminology are both more confident and better motivated and their understanding of medical terminology and basic medical issues leads to greater efficiency and effectiveness in patient care.
The issue of medical terminology is not exclusive to medical receptionists and other NHS support staff but also affects employees such as social workers, who may be required to review complicated medical histories and doctor’s notes relating to their cases. In addition, non-executive directors of healthcare institutions, with a considerable knowledge of financial and organisational issues, can be put at a disadvantage in the boardroom because of their lack of familiarity with complicated medical terminology and abbreviations.
The process of implementing training programmes that solve these problems is made easier by firms offering specific courses that cater to the requirements of non-technical staff. Medical Services Training, based in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, provide fun and interactive courses that help non-clinical staff understand medical and dental terminology and related subjects, including prescriptions, test investigations and summarising notes.
MST work closely with Primary Care Trusts, NHS Trusts, Social Services, and individual practices. They have recently developed courses for social workers and non-clinical dental staff as well as sessions specifically covering an understanding of oncology, cardiology and orthopaedics. MST have operated for over 15 years and have trainers based around the country. Courses are held over one or two days, or can be adapted into shorter sessions. They run in-house programmes for individual (or groups of) practices within a locality, as well as holding regular open sessions in various locations.
