FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Sustainable Procurement Drive Underlines the Key Responsibilities of Public Sector Managers

April 4th, 2008

Public sector organisations have long been under pressure to demonstrate leadership in sustainable procurement and development, but this has taken on greater urgency following the Government’s ratification of the Sustainable Development Commission’s ‘Procuring the Future’ guidance document, particularly in how they approach the key factors relating to sustainable procurement illustrated in the Flexible Framework, such as staff training, internal strategy and engagement with suppliers.

Managers within the public sector now have a clear responsibility to demonstrate both an understanding of sustainable procurement issues and a degree of leadership in encouraging organisations to consider their impact on the environment. This is in addition to existing responsibilities from a legislative and risk minimisation perspective, such as compliance with the Water Act 2003 which places a duty on all public bodies to take into account water conservation and to reduce water use to an efficient level.

BMT Isis has expertise in the fields of environmental management and sustainability assessments enabling them to formulate an action plan for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) supplier engagement programme. BMT Isis is supporting the MoD’s drive to become public sector leaders at supplier engagement within sustainable procurement. BMT Isis’s intimate working knowledge of the requirements laid out in ‘Procuring the Future’ and its implications for both public and private sector organisations has resulted in a number of contracts to deliver supplier engagement programmes for the MoD on behalf of Envirowise.

BMT Isis works with a wide range of organisations including local and central government, defence and commercial organisations, on issues surrounding safety, environmental and sustainability management. They provide support to regulators, designers, operators and suppliers and also advise organisations on how they can market their green credentials and disseminate information relating to these activities.
